Once cultivated extensively in Dindigul region exclusively for biryani to be served to the ruling elite, Kaala Baath would announce its arrival , filling the nearby villages with its rich aroma when ready for harvest. Like many of its ancestral cousins, it’s cultivation in the region declined after the arrival of hybrid paddy varieties.
This aromatic rice can be used for traditional Pongal, the all time favourite Ghee Rice and of course Biryani !!
